Beirut design week 2015 set to commence june 1

The fourth edition of BDW is set to kick off June 1, under the theme of “Social Beings” at Beirut Souks. This is the first time that the festival – the largest of its kind in the MENA region – will be operating under a theme. This year’s festival will be underpinned by three principles: value over aesthetics, inclusiveness over elitism and dialogue over dictation, all self-explanatory according to Toutikian.

Lebanese men sport heels to stomps on abuse

Lebanese men strolled through Marina Dbayyeh in red high heels Sunday as part of the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” campaign, an international march in women’s shoes to raise awareness about violence against women. Civil society groups and activists still consider the law an achievement that resulted from years of lobbying for legislation on domestic violence. While the law has been successfully used to protect victims of domestic violence, civil society groups argue that problems remain with implementing the legislation.

A roller coaster ride

Makdessi Street’s nightlife has dramatically risen and fallen in popularity over the past 10 years. Nightlife on Makdessi Street is slowly going uphill again with the opening of the Courtyard, a cluster of four resto-pubs under one roof just next to Alleyway. “Makdessi is no longer a national destination which people come to from all areas, like Mar Mikhael now is, but a regional one”.

Beirut’s ‘down and dirty’ nightlife on air

There are not many places in Lebanon where one can hear disco, boogie and funk on any night of the week. Dobson’s, who’s radio nom de guerre is Tara Jane, weekly show consists of her playing a collection of relatively new music that she’s been listening to and is mainly focused on music discovery. Dobson explained that the show was originally a talk show wherein local and sometimes international guests would come on and discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of Beirut’s nightlife.

Tsu-naameh

Typically, not much thought is given to trash once it’s removed from the home — out of sight, out of mind. Not so in Lebanon. The problem of garbage disposal in the country has become a chronic and pressing issue. Last month the government outlined an amended plan for waste management through a short (and hence vague) resolution that organized the country into six regions.
