Restaurant syndicate pushes food-safety compliance

The Syndicate of Restaurant Owners is mobilizing to provide Lebanon’s eateries with better information and training in order to improve food safety. The initiative will help eateries recognize the authorities who deal with food safety, determine the difference between quality inspection and quality assurance, and learn how various products must be handled.

Ashrafieh’s car-free craze picks up speed

In cities with good public transportation, some people live their entire lives “car free.” In Beirut, where a plethora of red-plated service taxis vie for space on congested streets with enormous SUVs, often transporting a lone businessman or woman to work, freedom from cars is the stuff of daydreams. Cities around the globe designate certain areas pedestrian only each year on Sept. 22, World Car Free Day, which aims to promote mass transit, cycling or walking as alternatives to driving. Conceived by MP NadimGemayel, the independent organization is run by a committee of 20 local residents. Its long-term aims are to transform Ashrafieh over the course of eight years, introducing green initiatives, pedestrianization, bike lanes and wheelchair accessibility.

Trash piles up as activists rubbish deal

Efforts to reach an agreement to end a sit-in near a waste dump south of Beirut hit a dead end Sunday, as garbage piled up on the streets of the capital and across Mount Lebanon for a third day. Locals and environmental activists protesting at the overflowing Naameh waste dump are calling for the permanent closure of the landfill, arguing that it has become a health hazard for residents.
